Wells Fargo customers' private information may be in the wrong hands.

The bank has confirmed to Channel 9 that thousands of clients' bank statements were sent to the wrong customers.

Channel 9 first received reports from the Rock Hill Herald and from WFTV in Orlando of customers telling them they have received other people's bank statements from Wells Fargo.

A bank representative in Florida told WFTV the problem is affecting nearly 4,000 people just in Florida.

Wells Fargo representative Josh Dunn released the following statement to Channel 9 on Thursday afternoon:

"We've confirmed that some of our customers with accounts established in SC or FL may have received in error pages from other customers' account in their paper statements. Online banking is unaffected.

The error occurred from a single printer malfunction that printed all of the affected statements. It's no longer in service until the bank is sure it has diagnosed and corrected the problem. It regrets letting customers down and apologizes for any inconveniences it may have caused.

We are providing all customers whose statement were mistakenly mailed out with one year's worth of free ID theft protection.

(The) printer malfunction is not related to the recent Wachovia-Wells Fargo merger."

Dunn said that the malfunctioning printer was in Charlotte and printed multiple customers' account and transaction information on pages, or even single pages, of one statement.

Dunn said the bank is treating the matter as a security breach adding that any type of fraud related to this mix up with be fully reimbursed.

Wells Fargo officially launched its brand in Charlotte at a ribbon cutting event on Thursday.

Wells Fargo and Wachovia combined community banking operations as 320 banking locations and 651 ATMs in North Carolina converted to Wells Fargo this past weekend.
