Woman shot, killed outside apartment complex

FORT MILL, S.C.,None — A woman was killed and her teenage son was injured in a shooting outside a Fort Mill apartment complex Thursday.

The shooting happened in the parking lot of the Avery Lake Apartments on Thursday morning, Fort Mill police said.

SLIDESHOW: Police investigate shooting

Officers were initially called to the apartment complex because of a domestic disturbance. As police were on their way, they said, 38-year-old James Diago opened fire and shot 34-year-old Jackie Craine, who was in an SUV.

Craine's 16-year-old son was also in the SUV and was wounded by gunfire, police said. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said Diago and Craine had a prior relationship. Craine lived just around the corner from the apartment complex where the shooting happened.

Neighbors said they heard multiple gunshots.

"I was just out working on some bills and I heard six or seven gunshots," Dawn Wing said. "I wasn't really sure that's what I heard."

Minutes later, she saw police.

"My suspicion was right," she said. "Something bad had happened."

Craine was taken to Piedmont Medical Center, where she died.

Police said Diago ran into some nearby woods but was soon found. He is now in police custody and charges are pending, investigators said.
