Charlotte 49ers basketball games draw a dedicated group of fans. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte team, which started playing in 1965, competes at the NCAA Division I level and is a founding member of Conference USA. The 49ers rejoined the conference in 2013 after spending eight years in the Atlantic 10 Conference. They have seven NIT appearances to their credit: in 1976, when they made the finals, and 1989, 1994, 2000, 2006, 2008 and 2013.

Charlotte 49ers men's basketball tickets: Admission for Charlotte 49ers men's basketball is free for students who complete the reservation process at the online ticketing portal at ticketreturn.com/49ers. The general public can purchase single game tickets by calling the athletic ticket office at 704-687-4949, visiting the ticket office at the Barnhardt Student Activity Center on the campus of UNC Charlotte, or heading to the online ticket office at packthemine49.com. Season tickets are also an option.

About that nickname: The 49ers nickname comes from the critical year 1949, when UNC Charlotte, which began as an off-campus center of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, would have died had Bonnie Cone and her supporters not convinced the North Carolina Legislature that Charlotte needed a permanent college. The university campus is also located on state Highway 49 and Charlotte has a rich gold mining history like the "49ers" of California Gold Rush fame, though the Charlotte area gold rush preceded the one in California by a number of years.
