Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry (ECCCM)

Provides utility assistance with heating and cooling costs. Only provides assistance for emergency situations. Other assistance may be available upon availability of funds and qualifying circumstances, including rent and medication payment assistance.

Provides financial assistance toward electric and water bills with disconnection notice, but does not pay the entire amount.

*Salvation Army of Hickory

The Crisis Help Center provides a food pantry, clothing vouchers for Salvation Army Family Store, utility bill assistance and rent payment assistance. Shelter of Hope is a 90-day emergency homeless shelter for men, women and children.

Local residents who are having a difficult time paying their bills and making ends meet could get some help from the county community action agency.

The state does have an emergency cash assistance program, and that money can be used for paying rent and other housing needs.

They administer the Section 8 housing choice voucher program, address family self-sufficiency, run low-income apartments and public housing as well. All of these programs can offer help to people who struggle to pay their rent or energy bills.

Exodus Home

Exodus Homes is a faith-based United Way agency, offering transitional and long-term supportive housing for homeless recovering people returning to our community from substance abuse treatment programs and prison.

Food Pantries, Soup Kitchens and Delivered Meals

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels provides home-delivered meals to a recipient’s home four days a week.

Frozen meals can be picked up monthly by a family member or volunteer and delivered to recipients who do not live near a Meals on Wheels route.

Hickory Soup Kitchen (HSK)

HSK serves a hot nutritious meal Monday through Friday, provides showers and a hygiene program and a daily food pantry.

Eligibility screening is conducted to determine access to Emergency Pantry Services, which provides personal hygiene and household cleaning products that cannot be purchased with SNAP benefits (food stamps).
