7-Year-Old Died After He Was Hit While Heading To School Bus

UNION CO., N.C.,None — A 7-year-old boy died Friday night after being hit by a minivan.

The accident happened just before 7 a.m. in Union County, at the intersection of Medlin Road and Belk Mill Road.

Troopers said the boy, Jonathan Beegle, was crossing the street to get on his school bus when a 2002 Dodge Caravan coming from the opposite direction hit him.

There were already more than 20 children on the bus he was heading to, troopers said.

The bus's amber lights were on, but it was not at a complete stop yet, so its red lights and stop sign were not out yet, troopers said.

His older brother performed CPR on him after the accident.

Beegle attended Union Elementary School.

A different bus took students to the school, where a psychologist or counselor spoke to each of them individually. Other staff members went from classroom to classroom to tell other students about the accident, according to Union County Public Schools spokeswoman Luan Ingram.

The accident is still under investigation, but troopers said charges are unlikely and that speed doesn't seem to be a factor in the accident.

The speed limit there is 55 mph.
