Action 9: Woman had trouble getting title for modular home

ANSON COUNTY, N.C. — An Anson County woman said she had trouble getting a title for her modular home.

Reva Carpenter has a modular home in Peachland that’s on 12 acres, surrounded by cornfields.

But for two and a half years, she's been trying to get a clear title to the house.

The DMV, which issues titles to mobile and modular homes, told her she needed to have her ex-husband sign release papers, so she did.

“And so after that, still couldn't get it,” Carpenter said.

Carpenter even hired a lawyer, and when he had no luck, he said they'd have to sue DMV at Carpenter’s expense to get her title.

“I just didn't see doing that,” Carpenter said. “It was nothing that I had done. I had done everything I was supposed to.”

So Action 9 got in touch with the DMV. A spokesperson said they located a certified copy of the deed of trust in their files, along with a lien release.

The spokesperson said that would allow them to remove the block on the title and send Carpenter a duplicate title, free and clear.

Action 9 showed Carpenter the DMV’s response.

“That's great,” she said. “I am just so happy.”
