Action 9

Business spends hundreds on signs available for free

ROCKWELL, N.C. — Action 9 has a warning for businesses, especially new ones: You need to post labor law workplace signs or you could get fined. But be careful of companies that to sell them to you, because you can get the posters free.

Tony Moffre and his wife, Janna, found that out the hard way. They started TR Holsters in Rockwell a few years ago, making holsters for all kinds of guns.

‘We're just learning’

Their business grew to the point where they hired employees, which also meant that they needed labor law posters.

"We're just learning and we are wanting to do everything like we're supposed to," Janna Moffre said.

They came across a California company that makes the signs, Personnel Concepts. Its motto is "Your compliance partner."

It calls itself "the industry authority." It even promises to pay your fine if you get cited. But the Better Business Bureau said it has received 382 complaints against the company in last 3 years.

The Moffres bought $245 worth of posters, including ones about the Affordable Care Act, a drug-free workplace, E-verify, safety and sexual harassment.

‘Could have, would have, should have’

"I went to hang up the posters and noticed that it was actually listed for Indiana," Janna Moffre said.

She called the North Carolina Department of Labor and found out the hard way that it gives businesses all the posters they need for free.

"It's one of those that, could have, would have, should have," Janna Moffre said.

She wants other businesses to know that they don't have to pay for the signs. OSHA posted this warning on its website.

State labor officials told Action 9's Jason Stoogenke that they've already reprimanded several sign companies this year.

The Moffres said Personnel Concepts is giving them a partial refund. Stoogenke contacted the company April 20 to ask why it charges people for posters that they can get free. He's still waiting to hear back.
