ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — Neighbors are upset living near a piece of land with dozens of vehicles just sitting there and they want the area cleaned up.
SkyDrone 9 flew over the lot at the corner of Highway 152 and Castor Road in Rowan County.
More than 40 cars, trucks, minivans and SUVs were present. Some of the cars looked driveable, while others did not. Action 9 noticed some had been in the same spots for weeks.
"It's just frustrating," neighbor Joseph Lee said. "It's not right."
Action 9 found out the lot is a code violation. Rowan County code says residents can only store vehicles in two kinds of zoning, CBI or IND with conditional use. This spot isn't zoned for either.
"I know this out in the country, but still, you know, what about us? What about us? We have to live here," Lee said.
Code enforcement knows who owns the site, but told Action 9 it's had a hard time making contact. They fined the owner $50 for starters, but fines could go up to $100 per day. Code enforcement even asked the county attorney to take the case to court if necessary.
The rules in Charlotte residential areas:
- You can't buy, sell, store or fix vehicles professionally.
- You can only have two vehicles on a lot that aren't registered to that address.
- You can only have one junk vehicle on the lot and it has to be in the backyard and covered.
