CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Aleshia Bennett and her children live in the Arbor Glen Apartments in west Charlotte.
"I've been there two and a half years and I've paid my rent every month," she said.
But, when she went online to pay rent recently, she couldn't believe her eyes. "It said [$]2,600," she told Action 9. "I was speechless. I was just like, 'So, where did this come from?'"
She said Arbor Glen emailed her, acknowledging "there were errors made on our billing side."
The complex told Action 9, "We are currently looking into any administrative issues that may have yielded any incorrect rent statements. Arbor Glen has undergone some recent onsite staff changes and accounts are being reviewed for accuracy. We follow the policy that no harm shall be done to any resident as a result of administrative errors."
The Charlotte Housing Authority helps renters like Bennett with their payments. So Action 9 asked CHA if it's involved in this situation.
A spokesperson said, "We are continuing to investigate this issue. At this point, it seems as though the property management has some administrative issues that has yielded some incorrect rent statements. All levels of CHA management are looking into the matter and we will ensure that no resident will be held financially responsible for an administrative error."
