CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Archbishop John Francis Donoghue, 83, has died. He served as the former Bishop of Charlotte and was the retired Archbishop of Atlanta.
The Diocese of Charlotte said he died Friday, November 11 at 6:00 p.m.
Archbishop Donoghue was ordained to the priesthood in St. Matthew Cathedral in Washington, on June 4, 1955.
He was ordained bishop in 1984, becoming the second bishop of Charlotte. In 1993, he was named to head the Archdiocese of Atlanta by Pope John Paul II, where he remained until he retired in December 2004.
David Hains, spokesperson for the Diocese of Charlotte said, "I ask for prayers for the repose of the soul of Archbishop Donoghue and for the comfort and consolation of his family members."
The funeral arrangements are underway.
