ASHEVILLE, N.C.,None — Asheville, North Carolina is once again crowned Best Beer City in America, beating out longtime beer enthusiast's favorite city Portland, Oregon.
BeerCity USA 2010 was awarded to the western North Carolina city, for the 2nd year in a row, after fans voted 38 percent in favor of Asheville and 34.5 percent in favor of Portland – (View The Results).
It all started in 1994, when Oscar Wong, a retired engineer living in Charlotte, moved to Asheville and opened Highland Brewing Company in a rustic basement space, just under Barley's Taproom and Pizzeria on Biltmore Avenue. Having outgrown that location, it is now based at a much bigger site in East Asheville.
Beer City was born in the mountains of North Carolina and now features six local breweries who all enjoy huge support from the local community.
BeerCity USA 2010 is a chance for local beer communities to express their enthusiasm and support for their local breweries and local better beer bars, restaurants, stores and distributors.
American Craft Beer Week coincided with the BeerCity USA poll and ended with an outpouring of online votes to determine the winner.
Over 19,000 votes were cast with some great well beer-known cities in the country making the top 10 including St. Louis, MO., Denver, CO., and Milwaukee, WI.
Beer festivals and American beer culture has skyrocketed over the last couple years as more and more beer fests and beer weeks emerge throughout the country.
The times have changed for beer drinkers as responsible celebrations and access to choice and diversity have ramped up all over the world.
