Cable company charges some for adapter that's supposed to be free

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Time Warner Cable is in the process of switching to digital. That means many customers need special digital adapters for their TVs. The company has said multiple times it's offering those adapters free until next summer.

Some customers told Action 9's Jason Stoogenke they think the company is sneaking the charge onto people's bills anyway, hoping they won't notice.

LaVerne Trojan got three of these digital adapters that are supposed to be free. But TWC charged her $2.75 for one of them, three bills in a row.

"We're being charged for something that they said we shouldn't be charged for," she said.

She contacted TWC. The company called it a mistake and dropped the fee.

Trojan wonders if it really was an honest mistake.

"I don't like to believe that somebody's doing something to specifically (try) to hurt us, but it kind of looks that way," she said.

Two other people emailed Stoogenke with similar concerns. One accused TWC of "fleecing ... customers."  Another called it a "bait and switch."

TWC corrected the bills of those customers as well and the company denies any intentional plan to over-charge customers.

It sent Stoogenke a statement, saying, "This is an isolated issue affecting a handful of customers. We worked with these individual customers to resolve this issue and are sorry for any inconvenience."

Still, Trojan is warning customers to check their bills carefully.

"I think the more people that know about it the better," she said.

Always go over your bill line by line. Call as soon as you see something wrong. If you don't get the answer you want, keep asking to speak to a supervisor.
