CLOVER, S.C.,None — A Clover man led police on a high-speed chase Saturday night that reached speeds of more 90 miles per hour right through downtown Clover, authorities said.
"It was a dangerous situation," said Detective Tanner Davis of the Clover Police Department.
Police gave Eyewitness News the video from a pursuing officer's dash camera. They said it shows 42-year-old Robert Goforth driving a burgundy Cadillac.
The vehicle is seen weaving back and forth across Highway 55 and then Highway 321, even driving on the wrong side of the road.
At one point, Goforth slammed into the rear of a car that was stopped to turn into a restaurant on Highway 55, police said.
The victim didn't want to be identified, but he showed Eyewitness News the damage to his car. He was injured when the impact shoved him into the back seat as his car spun around on the road.
Officers said Goforth didn't stop but continued driving for another 10 minutes.
"It was very obvious that this guy was not going to stop, and it was going to be difficult to reach that point," Davis said.
York County sheriff's deputies got involved and attempted to use spike strips ahead of the driver on Highway 321 North. On the video, you can see the driver making an abrupt U-turn before his car hit the strips.
Officers said Goforth was headed back to Clover when a deputy was able to pull in front of him and block his car.
Goforth crashed into the sheriff's deputy's car and was trapped between it and a Clover police cruiser, authorities said.
Police said Goforth failed a field sobriety test and was charged with driving under the influence.
Officers said the incident began as a domestic disturbance call. Police reports said Goforth tried to force his way into his son's home on Ridge Avenue.
Another family called police and Goforth drove off at high speed, authorities said. They said he drove back by the house again as police arrived and that's when began the chase.
