CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools Police officers are still trying to identify dozens of middle and high school girls after nude pictures of them were shared online.
Thursday, Channel 9 reported that students at three different schools had access to the 75 nude pictures.
Police found a photo-sharing website that was used to post 75 nude pictures of middle and high school girls. Some students were as young as 14 years old.
Sources said that police believe a middle school boy created an account on Dropbox and shared the pictures with friends at Hough High School and at Bradley Middle and Bailey Middle schools.
Getting parents involved
Wendy Petricoff, from Charlotte Parenting Solutions, said technology has become the latest form of substance abuse for teenagers.
"Kids are not equipped to deal with the emotional stress that comes with this," Petricoff said.
She pointed to studies that show that 20 percent of all teens have sent a sexually explicit text before and that alone should prompt parents to get involved.
"It takes a lot of work actually, and what parents really need to know is that they need to be approachable and that they need to be informed," Petricoff said.
CMS officials told Eyewitness News Thursday that they are considering hosting an engagement session with parents at Hough High and the two middle schools to talk about the dangers of social media.
Rhonda Lennon, the CMS board member who represents that district, posted this message on Facebook to parents: "Take time to talk to your kids. Sending the pics is distribution of child porn; This could be a devastating and life changing situation for these kids; Please make sure you sit down and have this talk.... I did this afternoon."
The district is still planning the engagement session and wants to make sure parents are part of the discussion.
