Electric space heater believed to be cause of house fire in Catawba Co.

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — An electric space heater is believed to have caused a fire that destroyed a home in the Vale community Monday.

Firefighters said they responded to the fire around 4 a.m. along Phelps Road south of Hickory.

Five different fire departments in Catawba and Lincoln counties responded to the area.

The Forest Service was called in to assist after the fire spread to the woods surrounding the home.

A volunteer firefighter who lived next door rushed over to help his neighbors escape the home.

No injuries have been reported at this time.
