Father Stunned By Teenage Son's Stabbing Death

SHELBY, N.C.,None — A local father told Eyewitness News that his teenage son, who was stabbed to death, had a big heart.

Dalton Fitch was killed while on vacation with his family in Myrtle Beach last weekend.

"This stuff only happens to other people," his father, Bryan Fitch, said. "He had a giant heart."

Bryan Fitch said on Saturday, Dalton saw his former classmate, Adam Dwiggins, who was also at the beach, get into a fight with a girl at Ocean Lakes Campground. Police said Dalton chased Dwiggins, and that's when Dwiggins stabbed and killed him.

Officers said they found a bloody knife in the sink where Dwiggins' mom was staying.

Police arrested Dwiggins on murder charges and his mother, Kathy, for allegedly lying to officers to protect her son.

Police said there were many witnesses, including an off-duty policeman from Nevada, who had stories that differed from what Kathy Dwiggins said.

She got out on bond Monday morning. Adam Dwiggins is being held without bond.

Friends at Crest High School said Dwiggins and Fitch both went to school there last year and knew each other, but were not close.
