DEEP GAP, N.C.,None — A Deep Gap home was destroyed and a family displaced by a fire Tuesday night.
Firefighters from Deep Gap, Stewart Simmons and Boone fire departments were called to the home at 233 Roby Watson Lane, located off Wildcat Road, at about 8 p.m., finding the structure already engulfed in flames.
The home was owned by Jim Brown and rented by Scott Sigmon and his family, which included three young children, said Fire Marshal Steve Sudderth.
"Scott and his family, thank goodness, weren't in the house," Sudderth said.
A problem with a wood stove appeared to have caused the fire, although Sudderth said he couldn't determine whether it was a failure with the stove or flue or simply an item placed too close to the stove.
The fire started on the first floor and eventually caused the second floor to collapse. The heat from the blaze melted the trim of a vehicle parked near the home.
Firefighters were again called to the scene at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday after the fire flared up again.
Sudderth urged county residents to check their heating systems for flaws and ensure that nothing is placed within three feet of a heat source.
