WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — One person was killed and three others were hurt in two separate shootings during homecoming weekend on Winston-Salem State University’s campus Saturday.
The violence comes amid what should have been a weekend of celebration, according to the university’s Chancellor Bonita Brown.
Winston-Salem police said it’s too early to tell if the shootings were connected, but they did reassure the university community that the campus has been secured, the Associated Press reported. They have not said whether any arrests have been made.
In a public statement, Brown extended condolences and prayers to those affected by the shootings.
“This senseless violence has shaken our university community, and our hearts are heavy,” she said.
All other homecoming events and activities have been canceled for the weekend, and additional law enforcement will be on campus throughout the day Sunday as the investigation continues.
The university is offering counseling services for students in the wake of the incidents.
