GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Thirteen volunteer firefighters in Gaston County have reportedly left their department in protest over the board of directors’ decision to hire a new chief, according to our partners at the Gaston Gazette.
The Agriculture Center Volunteer Fire Department serves Bessemer City, High Shoals and Dallas.
The department, staffed with volunteers, said they weren't consulted when the board decided to replace Matthew Kanupp as chief with Charlotte Fire Department Capt. Shane Towery, the Gazette reports.
It is expected that the decision will be made official at the board's next meeting. on July 10.
More than 30 volunteer firefighters remain at the department.
