2 deputies hurt after shooting in Robeson County

ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. — Two deputies in Robeson County were taken to the hospital after being shot Tuesday morning, according to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office says a suspect is in custody but was also being treated after being shot.

It happened Tuesday morning near Old Red Springs Road and Clark Road, according to our affiliates at ABC15.

The sheriff’s office said that deputies were attempting to serve a warrant when a shootout occurred. The suspect ran into the woods when he saw authorities arrive at his home, and he started firing when deputies found him hiding behind a tree. The deputies fired back, and then the suspect stole a patrol car and sped off. He was later caught down the road.

Robeson County Sheriff B.L. Wilkins gave an update Tuesday afternoon and identified the suspect as Shawn Tobin Locklear Jr., who is also the suspect in an alleged murder from last year according to our news partners at WTVD. Locklear was free on bond at the time when deputies were attempting to serve a warrant.

Wilkins told WTVD that Locklear shouldn’t have been released on bond, adding that he was “100% disgusted by certain parts of the judicial system.”

The deputies were identified as Jonathan Walters and Kaelin Locklear, and they were reported to be seriously hurt. It’s not clear if there’s a relation between Deputy Locklear and the suspect.

According to the RCSO, investigators are getting help from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the State Bureau of Investigation.
