ORANGE COUNTY, N.C. — Two Duke basketball players, including Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s grandson, were arrested in Orange County, North Carolina, according to our affiliate WTVD.
Krzyzewski’s grandson, Michael Savarino, 20, and freshman Paolo Banchero, 19, are charged with crimes related to DWI.
Duke Athletics released a statement on Tuesday which read, “We are reviewing a legal matter involving two members of the men’s basketball team. Any further actions as a result of this situation will ultimately be determined by the Vice President/Director of Athletics and University officials.”
According to WTVD, the North Carolina Highway Patrol said a trooper pulled over a vehicle driven by Savarino around 1 a.m. Sunday. The trooper said Savarino ran a stop sign and was showing signs of impairment, WTVD reported.
The station reported that Savarino was ordered to take a breathalyzer and reportedly blew a .08, which is over the legal limit in North Carolina. He was charged with driving while impaired, failure to yield at a stop sign and driving after consuming. He also had his driver’s license revoked for 30 days under this North Carolina law.
Banchero was in the vehicle with Savarino, according to troopers. He faces charges of aiding and abetting DWI.
Banchero was voted the ACC Preseason Player of the Year and is expected to be a top pick in next year’s NBA Draft.
Savarino walked on to the school’s basketball team in 2019, according to WTVD. His mother is Krzyzewski’s oldest daughter and an assistant athletics director at Duke.
Duke’s next game is Tuesday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium against Gardner-Webb. The players’ status for that game remains unclear.
