2 new companies offering high-paying jobs in Mooresville

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Hundreds of jobs are coming to Mooresville thanks to two new companies.

Both are offering salaries of more than $70,000.

When it comes to bringing jobs to the area, Mooresville is making quite a name for itself by winning what's known as the Micropolitan Award, for gaining the most jobs compared to other communities its size for nearly the past decade.

"We've been fortunate enough that we've won that award nine out of the last 11 years. Nobody else has even won it twice," said Robert Carney, executive director of Mooresville South Iredell Economic Development Corp.

The town may soon earn another award thanks to two new companies relocating to Mooresville.  In just a couple of months, EarthKind, a non-toxic pest control manufacturer, and Harvest Garden Pro, a renewable energy company , will make Mooresville home.

"That's huge for us in Mooresville because it really displays the diverse workforce we have and how attractive we are to a broad spread of companies," said David Coble, Mooresville commissioner-at-large.

The companies combined will bring more than 400 jobs. They're each looking for local skilled workers and offering high-paying salaries, nearly double the average annual wage of $42,724 in Iredell County.

"The average salary is going to be around $76,000 per job," said Carney.

EarthKind will retrofit an old warehouse off East Plaza Drive and turn it into a manufacturing facility. Harvest Garden Pro will create office space in the Talbert Pointe Business Park.

Leaders said the companies picked the area because of quality of life, area schools and location. They say being close to Charlotte and the airport were influencing factors. Residents said it's a win for the economy.

"Because of the quality of our schools and the labor force, a lot of high-tech industry just keeps wanting to come here." said Chick Pless.

Leaders said one of the biggest challenges they face is offering competitive, high-paying jobs. They say only 9 percent of the people who live in Mooresville work there.
"So bringing these types of jobs into Mooresville, especially paying jobs like this, it's really an opportunity for us to bolster that number," said Coble.

Both companies are set to start operations by 2015.

Leaders say more jobs are on the way. Plans are in the works for at least three more companies to move to Mooresville, bringing an estimated 350 additional jobs. The town recently purchased 500 acres to build a new industrial park.
