CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Wheels are spinning in Charlotte on Friday for 24 Hours of Booty. Cyclists are riding round the clock to raise money for cancer research.
"It's heartwarming to see that this many people care to come out and do this," said Dixie Cote.
It is the 12th year for 24 Hours of Booty and the first time for Cote.
Organizers expect at least 1,200 riders will raise more than $1.2 million.
"We are here to support our son riding on one of the teams," Cote said. "He is riding for his professor in school who is a cancer survivor."
The ride is centered in the Myers Park neighborhood, also called home of the Booty Loop and Bootyville -- its own little city and headquarters.
"My husband is an avid cyclist in the community and he just wanted to support his friends," said Joy Dietz.
Teams of riders set up campsites, and take shifts riding in between eating and relaxing with friends -- all with the goal of saving lives.
"Everyone is so supportive. So many races are getting canceled these days and that this keeps going – it's really great," Dietz said.
