Top executives at CHS see increase in pay

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — There was a nearly $5 million boost in raises at one of North Carolinia's largest nonprofits.

Top executives at Carolinas healthcare system saw a 12 percent increase in their paychecks in 2012 compared to the year before.

CHS CEO Mike Tarwater got total compensation of $4.7 million in 2012, up 11 percent from the year before.

Chief Operating Officer Joe Piemont $2.8 million, up 12 percent.

Chief Financial Ifficer Greg Gombar $1.8 million, up 8 percent.

At least 10 executives earned more than $1 million in 2012.

We showed people the numbers and heard things like "that's excessive" or "that's kind of high" today.

Amy Kelly from Charlotte has mixed feelings.

"If he  is working well at his job he deserves a raise but not at the ridiculous number you just said," says Kelly.
