8 years ago: 2 CMPD officers killed in line of duty

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It was eight years ago Wednesday when Charlotte-Mecklenburg police lost two of their own.

Officers Sean Clark and Jeff Shelton were killed in the line of duty.

Demeatrius Montgomery shot and killed them when the two responded to a disturbance call at the Timber Ridge Apartments in east Charlotte.

Both officers were shot in the head around 11:15 p.m. in the apartment complex parking lot.

Montgomery was sentenced to life in prison and is currently at Caledonia Correctional Institute in Halifax County.

The community responded to the death of the officers with an outpouring of grief, offers of support and donations to the slain officers' families.

Thousands of citizens lined the funeral procession with signs, American flags and tears of grief to pay their final respects to the officers.
