81-year-old Burke Co. woman dies after being hit by vehicle on Christmas

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — Betty Causby, 81, of Burke County, died Monday after she was struck by a vehicle on Christmas Day while she was getting her newspaper, state troopers said.

Lendlee McPeters, 17, of Morganton, was driving on N.C. Highway 181 near Hilltop Avenue when she ran off the side of the road, striking Causby, troopers said.

Paramedics airlifted Causby from Morganton to a Charlotte hospital, where she died.

The teen told troopers she wasn’t feeling well, fell asleep and when she woke up, she was hitting mailboxes. She then swerved back onto the road, and that’s when she said she hit Causby.

McPeters, who was not hurt, was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.
