CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Cammie Jackson is happy to finally be out of an apartment and in her own house.
"I love the space, I love it because it's mine," she said.
In moving out of the Thornberry Apartments in June, she didn't agree with one of the fees she was charged: the pet treatment charge for $125.
She's upset because Jackson said she never owned a pet.
"It wasn't right. I mean, if I had a pet and I did pay a pet deposit, it's fine. But I never owed a pet and that's why I fought it," she said.
Thornberry Apartments officials told her they detected pet urine in the carpet and changed the carpet and pad. Jackson thinks the problem was caused by a previous renter.
So, she asked the manager to see the invoice for the new carpet.
"She offered to let me see it and I started calling her back to get it and she never would return my call," Jackson said.
Action 9 got in touch with the manager at Thornberry. She declined to discuss Jackson's complaint. However, the manager refunded not only the pet treatment fee but other fees she'd charged totaling $201.
Jackson said others moving out of apartments to take pictures showing the condition.
"Because it's your word against theirs if you don't have documentation," Jackson said.
