Alleged grade tampering leads to investigation of Chester schools

The South Carolina Department of Education is investigating the Chester School District after getting a report of possible grade-tampering by a district employee.

Chester school officials told Channel 9 this issue was brought to their attention during the last school year and dealt with then.

"It was handled appropriately on our level.  We did self-report this incident to the Department of Education so they would be aware of what we've done," said Chester County Schools representative
Brooke Clinton.

Clinton couldn't comment on which school was involved or even which grade level.  She also could not provide any specifics, except to say that employee no longer works for Chester schools.

When reached by email on Wednesday, Department of Education spokesman Dino Teppara said the department is looking into the claim but had no further information and cautioned people not to "jump to any conclusions at this point."

Some parents told Channel 9 they were concerned that this could be happening in the local schools. Mary Williams has two nephews in school in Chester.

"That's not good. I don't know a teacher that would do that and sleep at night," Williams said.

Kathleen Stevens said school officials should forgive and not take harsh action against the teacher or employee.

"I think we do better teaching as parents, too, to not just kick a teacher out, because they may have made a mistake," she said.

Efforts to reach Chester School Board Chairwoman Denise Lawson were unsuccessful Wednesday afternoon.

School officials did not comment on when or how they found out about the alleged grade tampering.

It's not known at this point if this former school employee could face further disciplinary action.
