CHARLOTTE — A team of volunteers with the American Legion Family came out to spruce up Charlotte’s Freedom Park on Friday.
Around 50 people with the organization divided into groups to clean two markers at Freedom Park dedicated to Mecklenburg County’s World War II veterans.
“The best thing today about it is I had 4 people so far stop and say thank you for being here. We have a great group of volunteers, so it’s just been great,” said Gary Schacher, one of the volunteers.
Volunteers from the Sons of the American Legion, the Legion Riders, and the Legion Auxillary helped parks department employees paint handrails, wash benches, and landscape the park as part of the outreach project.
“I was a Scout, so I grew up learning that if you go into someplace, especially a park, you leave it more beautiful than when you came. So you always take care of things,” said Rohan.
The organization hosted their 104th national convention at the NASCAR Hall of Fame on Friday. The convention runs until the end of the month.
