Armed robbery suspect accused of leading officers on high-speed chase

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Police said an armed robbery in Indian Trail escalated to a police chase early Monday morning.

They said the suspect, 18-year-old Quintell Xavier Weldon, robbed a Circle K on Chestnut Lane before a chase involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

Police said the robbery started when Weldon entered the Circle K and pointed a gun at the clerk's head while demanding money.

A Stallings police officer said he observed the suspect speeding on Potter Road and initiated a traffic stop on E. John Street near the on-ramp of Interstate 485.

Police said once other officers arrived at the scene of the traffic stop, they spotted a handgun in the floorboard. That's when they said the suspect drove off.

Officers said they followed the suspect on Interstate 485 and back on U.S. 74 east, where he crossed the median and crashed into an embankment.

Police said the suspect then took off on foot.

Officials said a K-9 led deputies to a residence on Stevens Mill Road in Matthews and ultimately, a parked truck where the suspect was found inside.

Weldon is facing two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of marijuana, reckless driving to endanger and speeding to elude arrest. Police said additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.

No one was injured during the robbery or the chase.
