Atrium Health's $115M project in Concord hits major milestone

Atrium Health Concord project

CONCORD, N.C. — Thursday was a big day for cardiovascular care in Cabarrus County.

Atrium Health marked the final phase in construction of a 165,000-square-foot, four-story heart and vascular tower at its Carolinas HealthCare System NorthEast site. The tower, located beside the Mariam Cannon Hayes Family Center, is part of a larger modernization project at the facility and comes with a price tag of $115.2 million. Upon completion, it will offer interventional radiology and cardiovascular services.

Supporters gathered in front of the construction site Thursday to view a topping-out ceremony, in which the final steel beam (signed by hospital employees and construction workers) was placed atop the tower. Atrium representatives also buried a time capsule to be opened in 2037 at the site.

Phyllis Wingate, president of Atrium Health’s Northern Division and Carolinas HealthCare System NorthEast, says this new tower brings together the resources of Charlotte Radiology and Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute in Concord.

“It allows us to be able to expand on services and make them more accessible to patients. A lot of these procedures are done on an outpatient basis, so ease of access to getting into and out of the hospital is important,” Wingate says.
