Bee infestation forces college to change graduation location

SALISBURY, N.C. — A college in Salisbury must change the location of their commencement ceremony because of an infestation of honey bees.

Catawba College officials said bees were found inside the walls of Keppel Auditorium where graduation exercises were going to be held.

The college moved the Saturday morning ceremony to Omwake-Dearborn Chapel, but because the chapel has less than half the number of seats of the original auditorium, the morning graduation will be divided.

The road between Oliver's Way and the main entrance into Keppel Auditorium will be blocked. The college warns people to stay away from the outside of the auditorium to avoid the swarming bees.

Ceremonies held at Omwake-Dearborn Chapel:

  • Bachelor of Arts: 10 a.m.
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science: 12 p.m.
  • School of Evening and Graduate Studies (Master of Education, Bachelor of Arts Education, Bachelor of Business Administration): 2 p.m.
