Boone officials condemn 23 apartments after flooding

BOONE, N.C. — In just a few hours last Wednesday, areas around Boone got nearly 5 inches of rain, flooding roads and some apartments and homes.

Officials with the town of Boone said they condemned 23 apartments at the Bavarian Village Apartment Homes posting signs on the doors.

The planning director said some of the apartments had nearly a foot of water after Kraut Creek came out of its banks.

He is concerned about the moisture level in those units and says some dry wall, cabinets and appliances will have to be replaced.

Eyewitness News was in Boone last week at the height of the storm as firefighters and others scrambled to rescue people from the flash flooding.

Thursday afternoon, Channel 9 spoke with one of the students who is moving out.

"It got real messy. The water came up from the river. It got into the kitchen and it got through the back door, too. It kind of hit us both ways. Had to move all the electronics upstairs and that was about the end of it,” said student Derrick Thomas.

The apartment manager said they are working very hard to find all of the students a temporary place to live.

They are hoping to make the repairs soon and possibly get some of the students back in their apartments in the next week or two.
