CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — For two days, 900 individuals flocked to the Cabarrus Arena and Event Center for the county’s annual Special Olympics spring games.
Opening ceremonies started on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the event center, featuring a parade, torch lighting, and a performance by the Aurora Color Guard. Each year, these games allow Cabarrus County residents with intellectual disabilities to compete in track and field events and ‘go for the gold’. The games ended on Thursday.
This year’s games had the largest turnout of athletes since the games started in 1972.
