CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Dozens of first responders are riding bikes across the Carolinas this week to remember those made the ultimate sacrifice.
On Sunday, the Carolina Brotherhood Ride rolled through Charlotte, preparing to cycle across the two states to places where men and women have died in the line of duty.
Last year’s brotherhood ride ended in Pineville where firefighter Richard Sheltra died in 2016.
This year’s ride for 2017 line-of-duty deaths starts about 50 miles from Elizabeth City where four prison workers were killed in a failed prison break.
Their deaths, along with that of another corrections officer in nearby Bertie County brought attention to the state prison system.
This year’s ride will have a special focus on that group of employees. Money raised during the ride goes to support the families of the troopers, corrections officers, EMS, firefighters and police officers killed in the line of duty.
