Channel 9 uncovers 31 homes behind thousands of airport noise complaints

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The city of Charlotte has received more than 121,000 noise complaints against Charlotte Douglas International Airport in 2017, and now Channel 9 has found out exactly where the complaints are coming from.

[PAST COVERAGE: Over 121,000 noise complaints filed against Charlotte's airport in 2017]

Channel 9 obtained the numbers from the start of the year through Aug. 15. The data showed that this year there have been 121,205 noise complaints, whereas in 2016 there were 67,793 complaints.

It turns out almost all the complaints come from 31 addresses around the airport and one person filed 29,000 of those complaints.

Those complaints mean extra work for airport employees because they have to address each email.

“That's the only way to get your voice heard, is to continue to file complaints,” resident Carol Ann Bettini said.

Channel 9 asked how they file that many complaints.

Residents set up a computer program and have microphones mounted on multiple homes to measure the noise.

If that noise gets to a certain level, the program automatically files a complaint to the airport.

Officials did change flight paths in the past two years as part of the Metroplex, which spreads out flights.

Channel 9 told the airport director how the complaints are being filed.

“Am I surprised? No,” director Brent Cagle said. “I guess its ingenuity at its best.”

He said they want to work with the community because this issue isn't going away.

In perspective, Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, one of the nation's busiest, has only received 88 complaints this year.
