CHARLOTTE, N.C. — WSOC-TV meteorologist John Ahrens was awarded an Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Midsouth Region this past weekend in Nashville, Tennessee.

Ahrens won the Emmy for his coverage of the major weather events across the Carolinas in 2017, including Hurricane Matthew and the wildfires in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Ahrens earned his Seal of Approval from the American Meteorological Society in 2002. In 2009 he earned their highest designation as a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist.

Ahrens joined WSOC-TV’s Severe Weather Center 9 team in 2006 after working for WCBD-TV in Charleston, South Carolina. Prior to forecasting for the Carolinas, he worked at KTVO-TV in Kirksville, Missouri, right in the heart of “tornado alley.”
