CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte slipped 10 spots to land at No. 26 in an annual ranking of the nation’s best-performing large metros.
That ranking is produced by the Milken Institute after it measures metros’ economic performance based on job creation, wage growth and innovation industry metrics. The Best Performing Cities Index, which has been published since 1999, strives to help readers assess how well cities promote economic vitality relative to their peers.
In addition to focusing on jobs, wages and high-tech growth, the nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank also added new metrics for 2021 — household broadband access and housing affordability, in an effort to reflect the inclusiveness of local economies.
Also, five tier groups were rolled out this year as a way for policymakers, business leaders and residents to more easily compare their economic performance to peer markets.
