Charlotte health giants roll out new initiative

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The largest health-care providers in Charlotte have teamed up to roll out a pair of mobile health units to serve targeted areas of the city. The One Charlotte Health Alliance is a joint effort by Atrium Health, Novant Health and the Mecklenburg County Health Department, with financial support from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina to help fund operations of the mobile centers over the next three years.

The One Charlotte coalition was spearheaded by Novant executive Jesse Cureton and other business and community leaders in the wake of civil unrest that followed a fatal, police-involved shooting here in September 2016.

“One Charlotte was started to acknowledge that pain and to put into action a plan that will address core, systemic issues that create inequities in the Charlotte community,” Cureton said at a kickoff event in November 2016.

The mobile health units unveiled Monday will offer wellness education programs, blood pressure checks, cholesterol and glucose tests, and weight-management tools during the initial rollout, according to a news release posted on Atrium’s website. Eventually, they’re expected to bring medical, dental and behavioral health services to areas where many residents don’t have convenient or affordable access to this primary care. Services will target six ZIP codes in the area.
