CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte leaders will vote Monday night on making repairs to nearly 100 bridges throughout the city -- something that would cost nearly $3 million.
Officials said that the problem is many of bridges around the city were built in the 1950s and 1960s, and the booming population in and around Charlotte means many more cars are traveling those bridges every day, wearing them down.
City Council will vote a nearly $3 million contract for repairs and updates on 96 of Charlotte's 208 bridges.
Two of the bridges being worked on include 12th Street and North Tryon Street and Park Road over Little Sugar Creek.
Earlier this year, the American Road and Transportation Builders Association ranked North Carolina eighth for the number of structurally deficient bridges nationally, with nearly 2,200 across the state.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said 15 bridges are considered structurally deficient in Mecklenburg County alone.
The Federal Highway Administration requires bridges to be inspected every two years and several of Charlotte's bridges received renovations and repairs last spring.
There is no timetable for construction.
