CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Surveillance cameras in Charlotte: Are they there for your protection or are they an invasion of your privacy?
Those questions will be the focus of a community forum Thursday night in Charlotte.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department installed hundreds of cameras around the city before the Democratic National Convention. Months later, they remain in place. Authorities said the cameras are strictly for the safety of residents. The American Civil Liberties Union believes CMPD needs to be more transparent about what they're using the information for.
"We understand that it's important for the Police Department to protect public safety. We support that, but we think it's important for police to be accountable for what they're doing and how they're using the information," said Dick Hester with the ACLU.
The ACLU will host that meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Charlotte on North Sharon Amity Road.
The public is invited.
