Charlotte police get system to track what’s being sold at pawn shops

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is getting a system that will help investigators with theft cases by tracking what’s being sold at pawn shops.

On Monday, Charlotte City Council approved spending about $158,000 each year on a contract with LeadsOnline LLC, which CMPD says is “used by hundreds of agencies across the country.”

CMPD says the tech provided by LeadsOnline will let officers keep better tabs on what items are being pawned in local shops.

State law requires pawn shops to keep records of everything that’s sold, but it’s not clear how quickly investigators can get access to those records.

Police say the new system will help them to recover stolen property across multiple jurisdictions.
