WADESBORO, N.C. — A Chesterfield man led authorities on a chase that spanned several counties in the Carolinas, officials said.
A sergeant with the Wadesboro Police Department tried to pull over Bennie Earvain Smith, 29, at 12:22 p.m. on Camden Road near Wadesboro Elementary School because of a traffic violation.
The sergeant turned on his blue lights and Smith sped away, running cars off the road and nearly hitting a construction worker.
Authorities chased the car into Chesterfield and multiple agencies, including the Polkton Police Department, the Anson County Sheriff's Office and the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office, joined the pursuit.

Deputies believe Smith threw a gun and drugs out of the car, and the chase continued back across the state line to Wadesboro.

Smith ran from the car about 50 minutes later on West Wade Street and authorities, including K-9 units, searched for him for hours.
Smith was apprehended at about 6 p.m. near White Store Road.
He is in jail in Anson County under a $500,000 bond.
He was charged with:
- Felony flee to elude
- Careless and reckless driving
- Speeding in a school zone
- Left of center
- Resist, delay, & obstruct
- Felony to heed to lights and siren
