Chiquita chooses new CEO

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Chiquita has chosen a new CEO to replace outgoing Fernando Aguirre.

The company named Edward Lonergan, who comes from Diversey, an industrial cleaning company out of Wisconsin.

Lonergan was president and CEO of the Wisconsin based company and will come to Charlotte to try and turn around profits at Chiquita.

Chiquita moved its headquarters to Charlotte in November of 2011.

In August, Aguirre said he would be stepping down as the company released its second quarter earnings.

Aguirre will stay on with the company in an advisory role for one year to ensure a smooth transition.

On Tuesday night, shortly after the announcement, Aguirre told Channel 9 anchor Blair Miller, "It's been an honor and privilege to lead Chiquita.  Now it's time to turn the page to a new chapter."

Miller asked Aguirre what is next for him, and he said he is, "Ready to detox from the rat race and have time to smell the roses."

Lonergan starts his new job as Chiquita CEO next Monday.
