CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte city leaders plan to raise property taxes and charge small businesses a trash pickup fee to get out of a $22 million hole.
Council members voted Tuesday on what they want in the city's budget.
About 2,400 small businesses in Charlotte would have to pay $250 for the city's service.
They chose to raise property taxes nearly 2 percent, half of what the city manager recommended.
They also plan to lower trash pickup fees for single-family homes by $22 a month.
"Some may pay a little more some will pay less," Mayor Dan Clodfelter said. "There will be a mix of how it will all shake out. For all balance, council has come up with a pretty good balance."
Council members will revisit the budget on Monday -- two weeks before it has to be passed.
