Closure plans detail ‘historic cleanup’ of coal ash at Marshall Steam Plant, 2 other locations

RALEIGH — The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality approved the closure plans detailing the excavation of coal ash reservoirs at three Duke Energy facilities, including the Marshall Steam Station in Catawba County, the Cliffside/Rogers Energy Complex and the Mayo Steam Station.

DEQ has determined that the closure plans meet the requirements of the Coal Ash Management Act and are protective of public health and the environment, state officials said.

Duke Energy is required to excavate more than 80 million tons of coal ash from open, unlined impoundments at the locations and place the removed coal ash in onsite lined landfills.

DEQ said in January that it will be the largest coal ash cleanup in the nation’s history.
