Man shot, killed in west Charlotte, CMPD says

CHARLOTTE — A man died after being shot several times in west Charlotte Sunday night, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department detectives said.

Officers say they were called to Southwest Boulevard, just off LaSalle Street at Quentin Street, around 10 p.m. Sunday.

When they arrived, police found 36-year-old Anthony Dewayne Haley, who had been shot multiple times. He died at the scene, they said.

Channel 9′s Anthony Kustura learned the victim was a 36-year-old man.

Police asked anyone with information about the incident to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a homicide detective. Det. Dossett is the lead detective. Information can also be left anonymously with Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or by clicking here.

Reinventing the Beatties Ford Corridor

The shooting happened just a day after someone was shot during a large gathering about a block away. Police said they heard gunshots coming from a large crowd before they found the victim, who is expected to recover from their injuries.

For years, Charlotte’s Beatties Ford Road area has fought to reinvent itself. The city renamed it a Corridor of Opportunity, investing nearly $39 million in this area and five others to make it a safer place to live and work. But some neighbors, like Tanaya Robinson, say there’s still a lot of work to do.

“There’s been a lot of shootings and violence and everything,” she told Kustura.

She has strict rules for her kids: She only allows them outside for a few minutes at a time, and at certain times of day. Her concerns are only underscored with the two shootings in the area this weekend.

Neighbor Melissa Watson-Clark is concerned about the impact of the violence on the younger generation.

“I think we have forgotten how to disagree,” she said. “Teach people how to have a civil discourse.”

That’s a goal of Charlotte’s youth advocate programs -- teaching people to argue with words instead of weapons. Community advocate Leondra Garrett and her team gathered at the scene of Sunday night’s shooting with a message to the community.

“We as adults, we have to step up and we have to lead by example,” she said. “And these things are going to keep happening. It’s not going to change.”

That’s the exact type of change Tanaya Robinson is hoping for. Because at the end of the day, she said everyone deserves a safe place to call home.

“Everyone should, no matter what rent you pay, how much you’re paying, how much you make,” she said. “Everybody deserves a fair shot of a safe environment to raise their kids in.”
