MATTHEWS, N.C. — A Matthews man died Monday night after a collision involving a bicycle and a motorcycle on East Independence Boulevard. The crash occurred at approximately 8:04 p.m. near the exit ramp to Interstate 485.
Officers with the Matthews Police Department Patrol Division responded to the westbound lanes of the boulevard following the report of the crash. The incident resulted in a multi-hour closure of the interstate ramp while emergency crews worked the scene.
The bicyclist was identified as 54-year-old Andrian Anthony Visser of Matthews. Personnel from Medic pronounced Visser deceased at the scene of the crash.
The motorcyclist involved in the collision was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Authorities recently listed the driver in critical but stable condition.
The ramp to Interstate 485 from the westbound side of East Independence Boulevard was closed at 8:09 p.m. following the incident.
The roadway remained closed for nearly three hours to allow investigators to preserve evidence and reopened at 10:51 p.m.
The Matthews Police Department Accident Reconstruction Unit is currently leading the investigation into the crash. No charges have been filed in the case at this time.
The investigation into the collision is ongoing. Officials have not released further details regarding the cause of the crash.
