Virus has CMPD close to running out of electronic monitors, delaying justice

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has about 600 electronic monitors, but it is getting close to using all of them because COVID-19 has delayed court cases.

That has delayed justice for defendants who are out of jail. In some cases, police said the defendants are committing more crimes.

The number of people on electronic monitoring has jumped from about 400 to 570, which includes 160 charged with robbery, 46 with felony assault, 20 with murder and 18 with rape, police said.
