CMPD: 5 early morning armed robberies may be connected

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating five armed robberies on the north and west sides of the city that all happened before 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The suspects hit three gas stations, a hotel and a grocery store between 2:12 a.m. and 7:34 a.m. No one was hurt.

Detectives are using surveillance videos to determine if the robberies are connected.

Officials said the videos show that all five of the robberies were by black men. Witnesses reported seeing different clothes, but police said the men could have changed outfits.

List of robberies:

  • 2:12 a.m.: 7-Eleven at 6606 Tuckaseegee Rd.
  • 2:15 a.m.: Country Inn and Suites at 2541 Little Rock Rd.
  • 3:19 a.m.: Exxon at 3215 Queen City Drive
  • 5:42 a.m.: Times Oil Gas Station at 8400 Old Statesville Rd.  
  • 7:34 a.m.: Food Lion at 9548 Mount Holly-Huntersville Rd.

The number of robbers who went into each business varies from one to three.

Police said the suspects' car could be a gold or bronze Nissan Altima with a sunroof.

"It's unusual to have this many armed robberies this early in day, especially in some of these areas," CMPD Captain R.M. Golding said.

At about 5:45 a.m., two suspects robbed the Times Oil Gas Station at 8400 Old Statesville Road. One suspect implied that he had a gun.

“Two guys came in, jumped over the counter and took money," manager Evelyn Green said.

This crime was the fourth robbery in the string of five.

CMPD said the first suspect in the Times Oil robbery is a black male in his 20s with a medium build who stands about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 190 pounds. He was last seen wearing a white tank top, camouflage pants and had a black shirt covering his face. 

The second suspect is a black male in his 20s with a heavyset build who stands about 5 feet 10 inches and weighs 240 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie and black shorts.
